As students of marketing in the Institute of Technology, Tralee Jackie O’Connor and Cathal Heaslip were merely acquaintances having shared casual chats in lectures and bumping into each other every so often in college. This all changed one fateful night in Horan’s nightclub and the rest is history. The lovebirds now live together in Milltown, Jackie’s hometown.

Cathal went down on bended knee at the stunning Cliffs of Moher after planning a romantic getaway for himself and Jackie. It was a freezing day, so Jackie was only interested in getting to the bottom to grab some tea, that was until Cathal produced a small black box and proposed to his girlfriend of eight years with a stunning white gold diamond ring from Hilser’s Jewellers, Tralee.

Jackie and Cathal celebrated their wedding on June 24, 2016 with a gorgeous ceremony at Sacred Heart Church, Milltown followed by a luxurious reception at Ballyroe Heights Hotel, Tralee with 150 guests.

THE WEDDING PARTY
The bride was led down the aisle by her gorgeous sisters, Noreen Sugrue, Caroline O’Donoghue and Josephine Sheehan while the groom was accompanied by his close friends Eoin Sayers, Tony Clancy and Danny Murphy. Cathal’s nephews Eoin and Dara McCarthy and Jackie’s nephew Daniel Sugrue were adorable on the day as pageboys.

THE WEDDING TEAM
Jackie purchased her dream dress in Cork and had it altered to her liking by adding a bit of lace to get the vintage look she had imagined. Her sister’s veil was worn as ‘something borrowed’ and she accessorised the ensemble with sparkly silver peep-toe shoes. Her bridesmaids stunned in cobalt blue floor-length gowns. Cathal and the boys wore pinstripe pants and top hats. The groomsmen wore blue striped ties to coordinate with the bridesmaids. The mother of the bride wore a fabulous cerise pink dress with a complementary jacket from Hannon’s in Castleisland. Simple pearls and silver shoes as well as a subtle headpiece completed her look.

The bride and groom won their wedding cake from O’Carroll’s Cakes through a competition they entered run by Brides of Kerry Magazine. They choose chocolate biscuit cake, apple and caramel, lemon sponge and fruit cake for the traditionalists. They also chose to have a sweet cart at the reception and Cathal surprised Jackie by booking a photobooth because she loves personalised gifts.

Jackie and Cathal were transported in a cream Bentley from Horan’s Wedding Car Hire. It was the same car Jackie’s eldest sister had used on her wedding day, making it a sentimental touch to the day. John Walsh Photography caught the bride and groom’s special moments on camera.

SPECIAL TOUCHES
Jackie comes from a very tight knit family so she felt it important to include her late father in her day as much as possible. Her mum walked her up the aisle which was obviously an incredible moment for the pair, “we also made a donation to the Irish Heart Foundation in lieu of favours ensuring that my dad and his memory played an integral part of our wedding day,” Jackie recalls. The newlyweds got their ‘official’ photos taken at Ardfert Cathedral but they went back to their roots for a few snaps outside of the Institute of Technology, Tralee, where their love story began.

THE HONEYMOON
Mariam at Torc Travel organised the happy couple’s enviable stateside honeymoon, they spent four nights in Las Vegas followed by a seven night stay in Miami which provided the rest and relaxation Jackie and Cathal needed after the madness of their wedding day.

What was your experience like with Ballyroe Heights Hotel?
“Ballyroe heights hotel was a lovely venue for our wedding. We met with the manager Jonathan Collins on numerous occasions to go through the wedding menu, music options and the general set up of the reception room. our wedding flowers for the table arrangements and chair covers were also included as part of our wedding package, thus ensuring that it was a seamless transition and another thing we didn’t have to worry about. We decided on a package that suited us both, with the hotel proving very helpful and assisting us as much as possible.”
